First Time

Okay Family...I wanted to share the first time I've ever been frustrated with my locks story! Yes, I said it, "Monica is frustrated with her sisterlocks!" It only took me a little shy of four years, but it's possible and I'm human, right?

Don't get me wrong, I still love them and I still have no desire to go back to relaxed hair...If you've followed my blog then you are a witness to the various changes I've been going through over the last several months. Thus, initially, I thought the idea of cutting my locks was just another symptom of all of these changes...What do we do when we feel powerless? Change the things we can, right? So, I brushed off the urge to cut and experimented with different styles instead. Sadly, it hasn't worked. This prompted me to do some further exploring as to why I've really wanted to cut my Sisterlocks when I've spent so much time patiently waiting for them to grow...Here are my conclusions:

  • While I may curl my hair (my favorite style); most times, I wear it straight or in a pony tail. The problem that has arisen is now that my hair has gotten so long, it consumes a lot of my time roller setting them (my preferred style of curling). In addition to the length, the thickness remains the same. I may start off with a pony tail in the morning, but by midday, I'm taking it down because the weight of my hair; coupled with whatever ponytail holder I'm using gives me a horrible headache! Thus, I'm strongly considering cutting my hair into a bob. A bob will give me the opportunity to curl my hair, and maybe even wear a shorter ponytail. Below is a pic of bob I want (taken from the Essence Magazine). I'm open to your thoughts and opinions, so have at it family! What do you think?......Monica

P.S. What I forgot to disclose was the fact that in the near future I will be undergoing a MAJOR career change. While training in this profession, the hair should not be below the collar. This criteria only added to my argument (smile). My next retightening isn't until November 1st and I am due for coloring...I'll keep everyone posted!

It sounds like you are going into law enforcement. If so, I have friends on the force with long hair. They pin it up, tuck it under their hats and keep on going. Good luck with whatever decision you make.

Your hair is very pretty and it will not always do what you want it too but hang in there...

in a nutshell, you gotta do what's best for you! However, after having my first set of locks for more than 8 years, and cutting them off last year, even after thinking for one year before the cut, I am now at the point where I miss my locks.... I am growing another set. you can always do that. Long locks/hair is not for everyone, and I know a couple of sisters who wear their locks in a bob. Everyone has a different lifestyle/environment, so again, "Do what is best for YOU"

Take Care~

Queenli,

Your words are very encouraging, and thank you for sharing your experience with cutting your locks. Great food for thought!

I think you would look good in the bob. I have been thinking of cutting my locks too and it has not even been two years yet. The wet sets that I do requir4e me to stay under the dryer for at least one hour and a half. If I dont wet set it. Then it is just straight locs hanging with no style at all. Sometimes I just like change. Sorta like you. :-)

Napptown,

I know exactly what you mean!! I've sat under the blow dryer for hours when I wet set! During the summer, and when I have time..I'll normally let it air dry, but that can still take up to two days. Thanks for your input!

By all means go ahead and express yourself. Its only hair and it grows back if you want it to. You'd look great with it short. One thing I don't want to do is to limit myself because I want long hair so badly. If I find a style that's cute and its short, I go for it. My hair grows quickly and soon enough, I have other styling options.

Do what you feel is best for you. I think you will look fierce regardless of how you sport your locks...

Monica,

Your hair looks great as always. Can you get it trimmed every few months to keep it the current length it is. I love your length. I understand what your saying though, because my hair is starting to get some length and I am not looking forward to it. I like short and easy...

Blessing and keep blogging

That cut is sweet, and will keep the hair off your collar.
I live in the Killeen/Ft. Hood area also. I am wanting to get sisterlocks. Do you know of anyone close? Thanks, D. (deewolfie@gmail.com)

I think that you should cut it if you want to, especially if the weight might be affecting your health (headache). I have SLs for two weeks and hair is only 1-2 inches in length. I can't wait to get more length. However, I always said that I did not want my hair too long; it would be more difficult for me to style. Also, if I believe my hair was causing me any type of discomfort, I would not hesitate to cut. You are more important than your hair. You are an absolute gorgeous woman and that essence bob style would look cute on you. Good luck!
